Television Production 5G Jazz Jam Session 2023
Staging the Jazz Jam Session of the future in Turin with the "5G Audiovisual Broadcast Broadband Network" project.
The fast and reliable transmission offered by 5G Broadcast enables experimentation with new forms of content enjoyment and interaction, including music content. Within this framework "5G Jazz Jam Session," a live performance of music, dance and painting, took place in the setting of the Torino Jazz Festival.
The musicians of the Gianpaolo Petrini Big Band, distributed in three locations within the Officine Grandi Riparazioni and connected by a 5G Private Network multistage, performed a jazz improvisation. The technologies employed were able to guarantee performance and sound simultaneity, with a delay of just 10 milliseconds, not perceptible to the human ear.
An immersive augmented reality experience was simultaneously offered on prepared VR viewers.
The live jazz jam session was accompanied with pre-produced content in VR360 in POV mode of the city of Turin and its cultural production sites, a live VR Art performance and the dance performance, by the Fondazione Egri per la Danza, in environments set up with Osvaldo Moi's sculptures, reproduced for live fruition in the Metaverse.
On the technological innovation front, a highly articulated use case has been created in OGR in perfect harmony with the location, experimenting with the possible synergy between 5G Broadcast and CDN broadband networks through a seamless, user-transparent switching system. Relative to live content production and contribution, network and audio/video encodings have been optimized to achieve ultra-low latency. These technologies open up numerous possibilities for the production and contribution of audiovisual content and highly innovative artistic scenarios, introducing effective solutions to various critical issues, such as the problem of network congestion in live events with large audiences.
The City of Turin in collaboration with the Fondazione per la Cultura, in dialogue with the artistic direction of TJF, with the coordination of Rai Way, the direction of RAI Centro di Produzione TV di Torino, and the technical contribution of RAI/CRITS and other partners contributed to the realization.
The technological infrastructure built for the use case at Officine Grandi Riparazioni is summarized in the following points:
- Distributed TV production with ultra-low latency A/V signal encoding and exchange between remote performers over 5G Private Network, with live broadcasting in the sala Fucine.
- 5G Private Network realized in the three separate locations of Fucine, Duomo, Binario 3, for the contribution of A/V signals to the remote control system in the RAI/CRITS Turin via Cavalli venue.
- VR Art performance on a virtual canvas and passages in realized environment in the Metaverse.
- 5G Broadcast diffusion of live content to mobile devices.
- CDN Edge Local for broadcasting the live content over dedicated broadband channel in the OGR location to mobile devices.
- Fruition of the live event:
- live for the selected audience present in the sala Fucine;
- on mobile devices made available in the sala Fucine;
in purpose-built environment in the Metaverse on the viewers made available in the sala Fucine.
